Recommended materials
For paint and appearance-driven applications, start with materials that offer a smoother finish and strong paint system compatibility.
Electro-Galvanized (EG)
Uniform coating and smooth surface make EG a strong choice for appearance-sensitive painted parts.
Galvannealed (GA)
Often chosen where paint adhesion and downstream welding both matter in the same part.
Cold Rolled (CR)
Good fit when surface consistency, dimensional control, and a cleaner finish are priorities.
Quick comparison (at a glance)
The table below filters when you choose a decision driver above.
| Material | Best for | Surface / Paint | Corrosion | Heat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CR | Tight tolerance, smooth finish | Excellent | Low | Low |
| HR/HRPO | Structural, weldments, fabrication | Good | Low–Med | Med |
| GI | General corrosion resistance | Good | High | Low |
| EG | Appearance + paint-critical | Excellent | Med | Low |
| GA | Weld + paint systems | Excellent | Med–High | Low |
| Aluminized | Heat resistance + protection | Good | High | High |
What we’ll ask for (so we quote it right)
Send these details and you’ll get a faster, cleaner quote.
- Grade / spec (ASTM/SAE), yield and TS if applicable
- Thickness (gauge), width, and length if sheets or blanks
- Coating type/weight and surface requirements
- Form: coil, slit coil, sheets, or blanks with tolerance targets
- Quantity and release schedule
- Packaging needs for exposed or protected material
Want us to recommend the best steel for your job?
Send your end use, forming or weld details, and corrosion or paint needs. We’ll respond with a practical recommendation and a quote-ready path.
Selection Guide FAQs
Can you recommend a product if I only know the application?
Yes. Tell us the end use, environment, and whether the part is painted or exposed. We’ll recommend a material family and help narrow the spec.
Do you support JIT, blanket, or safety stock programs on these products?
Yes. JIT, VMI/Holds, Blanket Orders, and Safety Stock programs are available across our flat-rolled product lines depending on your release structure.
What’s the fastest way to get an accurate quote?
Send grade/spec, thickness, width or length, coating type if coated, quantity, and timing. If you do not have all of it yet, send what you do know and we’ll help fill the gaps.
